Rental Property Owners

More than fifty percent of all illegal drug labs are found on rental properties. As the property owner, some prevention may save you thousands of dollars and go a long way toward protecting the neighborhood from potential harm.

Please take a moment to review the following tips. Remember, as the property owner you are legally responsible for all cleanup and decontamination costs and these can run into many thousands of dollars.

At the time of application…
1. Ensure the entire rental application is completed
2. Conduct backgrounds check, including:

   Previous rental history

   Credit report

   Employment history

3. Criminal background
4. Meet every adult moving into the property and obtain a photo ID

Ensure that current renters are not operating a drug lab by visiting the property often and checking for…
1. Excessive accumulation of trash
2. Blacked out windows (often garage or basement)
3. Strange chemical odors
4. Paranoid / odd behavior
5. Frequent visitors for short periods at all hours

It is also helpful to introduce yourself to neighbors and leave contact numbers for use in the event they feel something illegal is taking place.

If you suspect an illegal drug lab on your property, do not enter the building.
