Middle School students attend leadership retreat at Wisconsin Badger's Camp
Students in grades 6-8 participated in an overnight leadership retreat at the Wisconsin Badger’s Camp. More than 35 students representing six schools attended the event.

Seven high school students also participated in the event as peer mentors.

The two day, one-night event featured motivational speaker Tom Kidd, who has in the past hosted the “All Nighter” lock-in for incoming freshman, the 2005 Middle School Retreat, and the one-day leadership training “Get a Life.” Kidd was invited to speak based on the great response to his presentations in the past.

Kidd focused on making the most of your middle school years, addressing challenges students face during these years, including peer conflicts, building a positive reputation, and dealing with the increased pressure to use alcohol and other drugs. Kidd's interactive style had them participating in activities that reinforced lessons.

Kidd also outlined strategies for planning for the future and reaching your goals. The emphasized the importance of writing goals down. He also talked about attitudes, and being thankful for everyday gifts.

Amy Mitchell of University of Wisconsin - Extension led students through a “colors of your personality” presentation, which identifies four distinct styles of communication and decision-making. Are you bold, like orange? Caring, like blue? Do you value organization? Fun? Spontaneity? Students learned about their learning styles, values, needs, and strengths in this unique personality analysis.

The event will also include an art session, featuring the work of Vincent Van Gogh. Students learned about the famous artist, and how his work impacted the art world. The class and art materials are sponsored by the Children's Advisory Board.

The Middle School Retreat is an annual event sponsored by Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital and the Crawford Abuse Resistance Effort. For more information on middle school programs, contact Stacie Anderson or Mary Sprosty at 608-357-2083.
