Kick "Ash" Bash celebrates being tobacco free
C.A.R.E.'s Youth Leadership Committee sponsored two tobacco-free events this past March. The popular "Kick Ash Bashes" were held in Prairie du Chien on March 9th at the National Guard Armory and in Soliders Grove on March 23rd at the American Legion. Both events ran from 8-10:30, and were open to middle school students from all area schools. Bash activities included a live DJ, make-your-own tee-shirt, concessions, trivia, a graffiti wall, and tobacco facts.
A mock concession stand helped illustrate the 4,000 agents in a cigarette, including ammonia (used in toilet bowl cleaner), arsenic (rat poison), and acetone (nail polish remover), Stearic Acid (candle wax), and Napthalene (moth balls).
The make-your-own tee-shirt station, called “FACT Fashion” gave students a chance to make their own fashion statement while sending a message to tobacco companies that they won’t be targeted. Some of the more creative tee-shirts read such things as “$ Not buying tobacco lies,” “Non-smokers get more kisses,” and “Don’t be a butthead.”
The bashes are an annual event of the C.A.R.E. Youth Leadership Committee. The events are funded cooperatively by Crawford County Public Health, Crawford Abuse Resistance Effort, and Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
