Youth drug attitudes and behaviors in Crawford County
This data is from the Wisconsin State Incentive Grant (WSIG) Cross Site Youth Questionnaire, a 171-question survey that measured risk and protective factors, and youth attitudes and behaviors related to substance abuse. The survey was completed in November 2003 by 1,621 students (6-12 grade students) in Prairie du Chien, Seneca, Wauzeka-Steuben, DeSoto, and Boscobel School Districts.

Questions about substance abuse include: lifetime use (have you ever tried these drugs), frequency of use (how often in past 30 days), age of onset (how old where you the very first time you used), perception of risk (do you understand the dangers), perception of peer disapproval (what do your friends think), and perception of parental approval, and youth access. Coalition members identified alcohol as the number one drug problem in Crawford County, a perception supported by this data.

Lifetime use: Indicate if you have ever used the following substances:
Drug Yes No
Alcohol 64% 36%
Tobacco 44% 56%
Marijuana 27% 73%
Other illegal drugs 0.2% 98.8%
How many students have tried substances? The “Lifetime Use” chart shows that a majority of students have tried alcohol, with an alarming percent having also tried tobacco and marijuana.

The survey identifies alcohol as the “drug of choice” among youth. Not only have more students tried this drug, but they use it more often. The percentage of students who use alcohol far exceeds any other drug surveyed. The “Frequency of use in past 30 days” chart shows that students used alcohol in the past month more than any other drug. The good news is the majority of students reported they have not used in the past 30 days.
