No longer together, but parents forever
A parenting class for parents in the process of divorce, never married, separated, or already divorced. Sessions focus on co-parenting, stress, communication, the personal and emotional aspects of divorce, and how to raise healthy families. Parents who participated felt they better understood the affect divorce had on children at different ages, how to put children first (and not in the middle), and how to communicate. Classes are scheduled four times a year. For more information on the next session, or to register, contact Jane at jane.schaaf@ces.uwex.edu or call 608-326-0223.

Strengthening Families
A parenting class, or a youth program? Short answer is both!

Strengthening Families is an interactive program that engages parents and their children in strengthening their relationships. Designed for parents and their youth ages 10-14, the seven week program addresses the ever-difficult balance of showing love while setting limits.

Sessions are two hours long, and meet once a week. Each session begins with a free meal, followed by the program. During the first hour, parents and youth meet separately with their facilitators. Youth cover goal setting, understanding their parent’s role, communication, dealing with peer pressure, and handling stress. Parents discuss setting boundaries, discipline, what to expect during the teen years, and how to help your child succeed. During the second hour, parents and youth meet together as a family for an activity that reinforces the lessons in individual sessions.

Strengthening Families is a unique answer to struggles parents and their middle school children face, including growing up without growing apart. To learn more about this program, or to find out when the next session begins in your community, contact Jane Schaaf at jane.schaaf@ces.uwex.edu or 608-326-0223.
